Description

Floating World: Paintings inspired by the Arts of Japan, features works of art inspired by the artist's longstanding interest in Japanese history and the arts.

Many of Ana Tzarev's paintings included in the collection interpret and document the traditions of Kabuki theatre and the intricate tea ceremony. A group of works are also based on Japanese woodblock printing, a form of art and communication developed during the Edo period (1603-1867) in Japan.

"I fell in love with an old portfolio of Japanese woodblock prints in a musty antique shop in a side street of a New Zealand city when I was barely 20 years old. The price was a few shillings and I emptied my pockets on the counter. My Money being well short of the price, the kind man took pity on me and sold them to me." – Ana Tzarev
